Shu¥inggenesaround in hot environments: theuniqueDNA transporterof Thermusthermophilus

چکیده
Natural transformation permits the transport of DNA through bacterial membranes and represents a dominant mode for the transfer of genetic information between bacteria and between microorganisms of distant evolutionary lineages and even between members of different domains. This phenomenon, known as horizontal, or lateral, gene transfer, has been a major force for genome plasticity over evolutionary history, and is largely responsible for the spread of fitness-enhancing traits, including antibiotic resistance and virulence factors. In particular, for adaptation of prokaryotes to extreme environments, lateral gene transfer seems to have played a crucial role. Here, we present a survey of the natural transformation machinery of the thermophile Thermus thermophilus HB27. A tentative model of the transformation machinery comprising of components similar to proteins of type IV pili and type II secretion systems is presented. A comparative discussion of the subunits and the structure of the DNA translocator and the underlying mechanism of transfer of free DNA in T. thermophilus highlights conserved and unique features of the DNA translocator in T. thermophilus. We hypothesize that the extraordinary broad substrate specificity and the high efficiency of the T. thermophilus DNA uptake system is of major importance for thermoadaptation and interdomain DNA transfer in hot environments.

Microbial communities evolve faster in extreme environments
Evolutionary analysis of microbes at the community level represents a new research avenue linking ecological patterns to evolutionary processes, but remains insufficiently studied. Here we report a relative evolutionary rates (rERs) analysis of microbial communities from six diverse natural environments based on 40 metagenomic samples. We show that the rERs of microbial communities are mainly s...

Introduction: Caffeine, with its energizing and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to increasing athletic performance, can reduce the exercise-induced inflammatory responses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of caffeine supplementation and exhausting exercise on inflammatory factors in hot environments. Methods: Thirty male athletes with a mean age of 26.6 ± 3.9 years...
متن کاملThe effects of Geno hot spring cyanobacteria on growth, survival and morphology of gill tissue in killifish Aphanius dispar in normal and long term thermal stress environments
A killifish species Aphanius ginaonis occurs in Geno hot spring is one of the unique fish species that could successfully survive and acclimated to the high temperature of hot springs. In this study, we investigated the effects of Geno's cyanobacteria extracts on growth, survival and morphology of gill tissue in Aphanius dispar exposed to normal temperature and long-term thermal stress. For thi...

In the present study NiCrAlY bond coating layer was produced by electroplating against common atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Both types of the bond coats were applied on IN738LC base metal then, the YSZ (ZrO2-8% Y2O3) thermal barrier top layer was coated by atmospheric plasma spray technique. Hot corrosion is one of the main destructive factors in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) which come ...
